Official: Winning lottery ticket sold in Maryland

In the hopes of striking it rich, people across the country are scooping up Mega Millions tickets. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

Updated at 1:56 a.m. ET: The Associated Press is reporting that Maryland lottery officials have announced early Saturday their state sold what could become the world's largest lottery payout of all-time, but it?was unclear if that ticket holder would get sole possession of the $640 million jackpot.

Carole Everett, director of communications for the Maryland Lottery, told the AP the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a Baltimore County store. She said it's too early to know any other information about the lucky ticket-holder or whether others were sold elsewhere in the nation.

The winning numbers for the Mega Millions prize were 46, 23, 38, 4, 2; mega ball was?23, lottery officials said late Friday.

National lottery officials were expecting to list early Saturday on their website how many winning tickets were sold and from what states, but Maryland sent out its news release and called media organizations hours before the scheduled announcement. The headline of its news release said the winning sale was "one of several nationwide," but Everett told The Associated Press she couldn't immediately confirm any others.

"We're thrilled," Everett told the AP. "We're due and excited."

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

In most participating states, tickets were on sale Friday until 10:45 p.m. EST, lottery officials said. The drawing was held in Atlanta at 11 p.m. EST.

Hopeful future millionaires formed long lines at stores.

Odds of winning the entire jackpot were 175 million to one, said Margaret DeFrancisco, president and chief executive of the Georgia Lottery Corporation.

This will allow us to ensure an enhanced holistic approach to services that we can provide to our women and increase their opportunity for a successful recovery.?The Women in Philanthropy and the Junior Welfare League share our mission to improve the quality of life of children and families in our community and it is a thrill to partner with them on this effort.?

The Chrysalis Center is a unique, 16-bed, extended residential treatment facility that offers chemically dependent mothers the opportunity to receive intensive treatment services while continuing to have their children?younger than 11?live with them. Research indicates that while undergoing treatment, women often replace their drug of choice with a food addiction and often demonstrate unhealthy weight gains, as much as?60 pounds in the first year. Compounding the problem, children often model their eating behaviors after their parents and as their parent?s weight increases, so does theirs.

The Junior Welfare League of Florence and the Women in Philanthropy provide a powerful and highly personal approach to improving the quality of life through their volunteer support and efforts in the Florence community.?Their grant funding insures that innovative and effective strategies are utilized to foster social, economic, educational, cultural improvement in our community. In order to address the serious health issue of mothers experiencing addiction issues, the Chrysalis Center received grant funding from these two civic organizations to establish a fitness and exercise room to be incorporated into the weekly treatment plan for the residents.?

Beverly Hiller of The Eastern Carolina Community Foundation?s Women in Philanthropy shared that most of the group?s grant funding is targeted toward the needs of women and children.?

?This is a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with Circle Park Behavioral Health Services and its Chrysalis Center to provide a unique and innovative addition to their services.?This is one of the nine grants that we awarded this year and it is wonderful to have an opportunity to visually witness and experience the impact it will have on the lives of the women receiving services here.?

The grant?s goals are for the Chrysalis Center?s residents to exhibit a more consistent and disciplined approach to daily exercise, demonstrate improved nutritional habits, and model healthier lifestyle habits that will support their overall recovery efforts.?This will be done by the establishment of an onsite health and fitness room that will include a variety of exercise equipment and machines that will be utilized regularly by the Chrysalis Center?s residents to support the grants goals.?Also, as part of this funding, the Chrysalis Center residents will receive a weekly group counseling session by a registered dietician to assist them in making healthy food choices and meal planning.?

Greek police recover ancient statue from goat pen

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek police recovered an ancient statue that was illegally excavated and hidden in a goat pen near Athens, and arrested the goat herder and another man who were allegedly trying to sell the work for ?500,000 ($667,000).

The marble statue of a young woman dates to about 520 B.C. and belongs to the kore type, a police statement said Wednesday. Police photos showed the 1.2-meter (4-foot) work to be largely intact, lacking the left forearm and plinth.

Although dozens of examples of the kore statue and its male equivalent, the kouros, are displayed in Greek and foreign museums, the type is considered very important in the development and understanding of Greek art. New discoveries in good condition are uncommon.

Archaeologists who inspected the find estimated its market value at ?12 million ($16 million), a police official said.

"They told us that this is a unique piece," the official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to the speak to the media since the investigation is still ongoing.

Still bearing traces of soil, the statue has the hint of a smile on its lips, elaborately braided hair and an ankle-length gown.

Police said it had been concealed in a goat pen near the village of Fyli, in the foothills of Mount Parnitha on the northwestern fringes of Athens. The 40-year-old goat herder and another Greek man aged 56 were arrested.

Detectives are seeking to determine where the statue was excavated, which could potentially lead archaeologists to a previously unknown 6th century B.C. sanctuary or cemetery.

The archaeological remains of civilizations stretching back thousands of years are spread all over Greece. By law, all antiquities are state property. But pillaging is a highly lucrative business.

The police official said the suspects arrested Tuesday had put out feelers to potential buyers in Greece, and "would have sold it for a relative pittance, ?500,000, given its market value."

In another major success two years ago, police in southern Greece recovered a pair of twin kouros statues, and arrested two suspected looters.

Dozens of illegally exported finds have been returned to Greece over the past few years, including masterpieces from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

GM recalling vans, SUVs to fix steering problem

DETROIT (AP) ? General Motors is recalling more than 6,000 big vans and SUVs because their steering can fail.

The recall affects certain 2012 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans, and Chevrolet Suburban and GMC Yukon XL SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website Saturday that a gear shaft can break, causing a loss of steering. GM says no crashes or injuries have been reported.

The problem was discovered in testing by the company that makes the gear shafts. GM says failure won't happen until the vehicles have been in service for at least 5 months under severe use.

The vans carry up to 15 passengers and are used widely by churches and airport shuttle services.

GM dealers will inspect the steering gear shaft and replace it if necessary.

Gloria Ohland: While Congress Fiddles, Southern California Shows How to Get Things Done

When a delegation from the L.A. Chamber of Commerce visited Congress earlier this month to lobby for passage of the federal surface transportation reauthorization, members were greeted warmly by federal transportation officials who noted that L.A. was providing a model for Congress on how to get things done.

"You check your politics at the door," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, who with U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Federal Transit Administration head Peter Rogoff, complimented the chamber delegation on the bold and broad business-labor-environmental coalition that is supporting massive investment in L.A.'s public transportation system.

Congress has bogged down in partisan and ideological brinksmanship over the transportation reauthorization -- and many other issues -- so often during the past four years that the federal transportation bill will have to be extended for the ninth time when the current extension runs out March 31. While the Senate approved its bipartisan version of the bill this week under the leadership of Senator Boxer and Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) had to abandon his bill, which linked infrastructure programs with domestic oil production.

The lack of a federal bill means states haven't had the funding assurances they need to begin major multi-year infrastructure projects that could provide hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of jobs to American workers.

While the grand coalition that championed the Measure R sales tax for transportation in L.A. County in 2008 is one example of how to get things done in a bipartisan manner, another perhaps even grander example of how cooperation, community and bipartisanship can yield impressive results is currently underway in Southern California.

Every four years the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) adopts a 25-year regional transportation plan (RTP) that has to "meet conformity" with the federal Clean Air Act in order for the six-county region to continue to receive federal transportation funding. During this planning cycle the RTP was for the first time paired with a "sustainable communities strategy"(SCS) -- mandated by the state's new GHG reduction law, SB 375 -- that lays out a plan to reduce GHGs by reducing driving.

The public rarely shows up at SCAG, an agency governed by a bipartisan 83-member regional council, but the SCS has drawn hundreds of people into SCAG's planning process. Meetings have been crowded with advocates demanding more transit, bike lanes and pedestrian improvements and more affordable housing choices, and doctors and academics testifying that in order to deal with the health and obesity crisis the region needs to create "active environments" -- because auto-oriented communities have literally engineered physical activity out of our lives.

The broad interest in charting a new direction in community and transportation planning has resulted in a remarkable $524 billion regional plan that enhances the region's economic future and jobs growth by reducing traffic congestion despite a projected growth in population of four million residents. The plan doubles the number of people who will be living near "high-quality transit" (a bus or train that comes every 15 minutes or less), almost doubles the number of jobs near transit, and more than triples funding for bicycle and pedestrian projects.

The plan promises to yield a $3,000 annual savings to each household because of lower auto, fuel, water and energy costs, and a 24 percent reduction in pollution-caused respiratory problems, resulting in a $1.5 billion/year less in health care costs. The plan envisions future revenue sources including the substitution of a fee on vehicle miles traveled, a "VMT fee," for the current gas tax.

There seems to be general agreement across the region that our single-minded focus on building single-family residential neighborhoods connected by highways has reached the point of diminishing returns. Demographic changes -- a majority of single-person households and a rapidly aging population -- and rising gas prices are causing Southern Californians to demand a wider range of housing and transportation choices.

L.A. County voters demonstrated this when they passed the Measure R sales tax in 2008 to provide $40 billion for transportation -- $30 billion of it for transit -- by almost 70 percent. The Measure R investment together with the bike and pedestrian improvements and the increase in jobs and housing near stations is responsible for much of the GHG reductions in the RTP/SCS. And in the final run-up to plan adoption, SCAG staff may be recommending even more funding for transit, bike and pedestrian projects.

Prior to passing the transportation bill in the U.S. Senate, Senator Inhofe said he's always believed "conservatives should be big in two areas: national defense and infrastructure." We can only hope that the spirit of collaboration and bipartisanship evidenced both in the U.S. Senate and in Southern California -- and the acknowledgment that transportation investments and the jobs they create are critical -- will inspire the U.S. House of Representatives to move forward.

Apple sold 5.2 million Macs during the quarter, up 26 percent from a year earlier. The company sold 21 percent fewer iPods, at 15.4 million.

Jan. 26: Nokia Corp. says it sold 19.6 million smartphones in the quarter, down from 28 million a year earlier. That includes more than 1 million Lumia devices running Microsoft's Windows software. The Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 hit stores in Europe and Asia in November, while T-Mobile started offering the 710 in the U.S. in January.

Nintendo Co. says worldwide sales of the 3DS handheld totaled 11.43 million in the last nine months of 2011. The company is now forecasting sales of 14 million machines for the fiscal year through March 2012, down from an earlier 16 million, despite an August price cut. Nintendo sold 9 million Wii machines during the nine-month period. It is now expecting to sell 10 million Wii machines in the year ending March, down from an initial estimate of 13 million, which was revised lower to 12 million in July. The company did not provide quarterly breakdowns.

Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. says it shipped 10.5 million mobile devices in the quarter, including 5.3 million smartphones and 200,000 tablet computers. A year earlier, the company shipped 11.3 million devices, including 4.9 million smartphones.

Jan. 27: Samsung Electronics Co., maker of the Galaxy line of phones and tablet computers, doesn't disclose the number of smartphones it sells, but it says shipments rose by about 30 percent in the latest quarter, compared with the third quarter. No comparison to the previous year was given.

Feb. 2: Sony Corp. says it sold 6.5 million PlayStation 3 units, on par with the 6.3 million in the 2010 holiday quarter. Sales of the PlayStation Portable declined to 2.4 million, from 3.6 million a year earlier.

Feb. 6: HTC Corp. says several newly introduced 4G and other high-end smartphones disappointed as competition grew more intense from Apple and Samsung. It predicts its revenue will drop further in the current quarter, but will return to normal after that with the introduction of several new models. HTC doesn't disclose the number of devices it sold, citing competitive reasons.

Feb. 9: Lenovo Group Ltd. says it shipped 14 million PCs, up from 10.2 million a year earlier.

The Education Department today named Susan Patrick director of the Office of Educational Technology
Patrick is responsible for coordinating programs and policies on technology, including implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act, virtual education and e-learning, student data management systems, online assessments and the National Education Technology Plan.

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) will hold the 25th annual National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), Jammin? and Jazzin? with Technology, on June 21?23, 2004, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The U.S. Department of Education re-launched the National Education Technology Plan Web site and is calling for widespread participation in the development of the nation?s third technology plan. The ?Participate in the Plan!? section of the Web site will be open for comment through March 12. The department is seeking advice from a variety of constituencies in education, including students, parents, K-12 educators, college and university leaders, and members of business and industry. Individuals can participate by uploading files, including reports, articles and presentations, or by downloading and viewing what others have posted.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. is exiting the annuity business so it can focus on its property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds businesses.

Its shares rose more than 6 percent in premarket trading.

The announcement on Wednesday comes a little over a month after hedge fund manager John Paulson urged Hartford to spin off its property and casualty insurance business. At that time Hartford said that it would review Paulson's plan, but warned that a breakup wouldn't be easy.

Hartford said that it will stop new annuity sales on April 27 and anticipates taking a $15 million to $20 million after-tax charge in the second quarter. Annual run-rate expenses are expected to decline by about $100 million, before taxes, starting next year.

Paulson's hedge fund, Paulson & Co. Inc., owns an 8.4 percent stake in Hartford. A representative for the hedge fund could not be immediately reached for comment.

Hartford Financial also said it is looking to sell or pursue other options for its individual life, Woodbury Financial Services and retirement plans but that it will continue to write new business in those areas.

Its shares rose $1.34, or 6.2 percent, to $23.05 in premarket trading.

The Hartford, Conn., company said its decision to exit the annuity business came after a board evaluation that was conducted over the past several quarters that ended this week. Annuities, which are a popular component of retirement plans, enable individuals to invest and get payments at a later date or series of dates.

In February, Hartford reported that earnings for its individual annuity business fell to $86 million in the fourth quarter, down from $96 million in the prior-year period.

"The Hartford's sharper focus will lead to an organization that, over time, will be positioned for higher returns on equity, reduced sensitivity to capital markets, a lower cost of capital and increased financial flexibility," President and CEO Liam McGee said in a statement.

Christopher Swift, executive vice president and chief financial officer, said in a statement that the individual life, Woodbury Financial Services and retirement plans "will be better positioned for success as part of other organizations."
