Nigeria: death sentence for former dictator's man (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? A judge in Nigeria has sentenced a former dictator's right-hand man to death over the killing of a politician's wife.

Judge Mojisola Dada at Lagos' High Court on Monday ruled that Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha should be hanged. He was accused of orchestrating the 1996 machine-gun killing of the wife of Moshood Abiola, a flamboyant businessman widely believed to be have won an annulled 1993 presidential election.

Al-Mustapha, the right-hand man for the feared military dictator Sani Abacha, has spent 13 years in prison awaiting various trials accusing him of murder in Africa's most populous nation.

New research finds milk drinkers scored better on memory and brain function tests

Pouring at least one glass of milk each day could not only boost your intake of much-needed key nutrients, but it could also positively impact your brain and mental performance, according to a recent study in the International Dairy Journal.1 Researchers found that adults with higher intakes of milk and milk products scored significantly higher on memory and other brain function tests than those who drank little to no milk. Milk drinkers were five times less likely to "fail" the test, compared to non milk drinkers.

Researchers at the University of Maine put more than 900 men and women ages 23 to 98 through a series of brain tests including visual-spatial, verbal and working memory tests and tracked the milk consumption habits of the participants. In the series of eight different measures of mental performance, regardless of age and through all tests, those who drank at least one glass of milk each day had an advantage. The highest scores for all eight outcomes were observed for those with the highest intakes of milk and milk products compared to those with low and infrequent milk intakes. The benefits persisted even after controlling for other factors that can affect brain health, including cardiovascular health and other lifestyle and diet factors. In fact, milk drinkers tended to have healthier diets overall, but there was something about milk intake specifically that offered the brain health advantage, according to the researchers.

In addition to the many established health benefits of milk from bone health to cardiovascular health, the potential to stave off mental decline may represent a novel benefit with great potential to impact the aging population. While more research is needed, the scientists suggest some of milk's nutrients may have a direct effect on brain function and that "easily implemented lifestyle changes that individuals can make present an opportunity to slow or prevent neuropsychological dysfunction."

New and emerging brain health benefits are just one more reason to start each day with lowfat or fat free milk. Whether in a latte, in a smoothie, on your favorite cereal, or straight from the glass, milk at breakfast can be a key part of a healthy breakfast that help sets you up for a successful day. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend three glasses of lowfat or fat free milk daily for adults and each 8-ounce glass contains nine essential nutrients Americans need, including calcium and vitamin D.

What do killer whales eat in the Arctic?

ScienceDaily (Jan. 29, 2012) ? Killer whales (Orcinus orca) are the top marine predator, wherever they are found, and seem to eat everything from schools of small fish to large baleen whales, over twice their own size. The increase in hunting territories available to killer whales in the Arctic due to climate change and melting sea ice could seriously affect the marine ecosystem balance. New research published in BioMed Central's re-launched open access journal Aquatic Biosystems has combined scientific observations with Canadian Inuit traditional knowledge to determine killer whale behaviour and diet in the Arctic.

Orca have been studied extensively in the northeast Pacific ocean, where resident killer whales eat fish, but migrating whales eat marine mammals. Five separate ecotypes in the Antarctic have been identified, each preferring a different type of food, and similar patterns have been found in the Atlantic, tropical Pacific, and Indian oceans. However, little is known about Arctic killer whale prey preference or behaviour.

Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is increasingly being used to supplement scientific observations. Researchers from Manitoba visited 11 Canadian Nunavut Inuit communities and collated information from over 100 interviews with hunters and elders.

The Inuit reported that killer whales would 'eat whatever they can catch', mainly other marine mammals including seals (ringed, harp, bearded, and hooded) and whales (narwhal, beluga and bowhead). However there was no indication that Arctic killer whales ate fish. Only seven of the interviewees suggested that killer whales ate fish, but none of them had ever seen it themselves.

The type of reported prey varied between areas. Most incidents of killer whales eating bowhead whales occurred in Foxe Basin and narwhal predation was more frequent around Baffin Island. Inuit were also able to describe first-hand how killer whales hunted, including several reports of how killer whales co-operated to kill the much larger bowhead. During the hunt some whales were seen holding the bowhead's flippers or tail, others covering its blowhole, and others biting or ramming to cause internal damage. Occasionally dead bowheads, with bite marks and internal injuries but with very little eaten, are found by locals.

'Aarlirijuk', the fear of killer whales, influenced prey behaviour with smaller mammals seeking refuge in shallow waters or on shore and larger prey running away, diving deep, or attempting to hide among the ice. Even narwhal, which are capable of stabbing a killer whale with their tusks (although this is likely to result in the deaths of both animals), will run to shallow waters and wait until the whales give up.

Killer whales are seasonal visitors to the area and have recently started colonising Hudson Bay (possibly due to loss of summer sea ice with global warming). Local communities are reliant on the very species that the orcas like to eat. Dr Steven Ferguson from the University of Manitoba who led this research commented, "Utilising local knowledge through TEK will help scientists understand the effects of global warming and loss of sea ice on Arctic species and improve collaborative conservation efforts in conjunction with local communities."

Peru: 26 killed in fire at rehabilitation center

(AP) ? A fire swept through a private rehabilitation center for addicts in Peru's capital on Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring 10 as firefighters punched holes through walls to rescue residents trapped inside.

One resident of the "Christ is Love" center for drug and alcohol addicts in Lima's eastern Zarate district said he was eating breakfast at 9 a.m. local time on the center's second floor when he saw flames coming from the first floor, where the blaze apparently originated.

Gianfranco Huerta told local RPP newsradio station that he leapt from a second floor window to safety.

"The doors were locked, there was no way to get out," he told the station.

Health Minister Alberto Tejada said the number of deaths had risen to 26 with 10 people injured.

Peru's chief fire fighter, Antonio Zavala, said the fire was of "Dantesque proportions." Firefighters had to punch a hole through a wall with an adjoining building to help the people trapped inside the rehabilitation center.

"We've had to use electric saws to cut through the metal bars of the doors to be able to work," Zavala said.

Television images showed relatives of center residents weeping in front of the building, located in a poor section of eastern Lima.

The cause of the fire is still not known, said Zarate police chief Clever Zegarra.

Local media reported that the "Christ is Love" rehabilitation center sought to use Biblical teachings to help treat addicts.

No representative of the center could be immediately reached for comment.

Peru's fire fighters are notoriously underfunded. All the South American country's firefighters are volunteer and the annual firefighting budget for the entire country is $19 million.

(This version CORRECTS name of center to 'Christ is Love' instead of 'God is Love.')

Columbus to host NHL All-Star game in 2013 (AP)

OTTAWA ? The Columbus Blue Jackets will host the 2013 edition of the NHL All-Star game.

Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement Saturday at the NHL Board of Governors meetings.

The Blue Jackets, who play in Nationwide Arena, had applied for hosting rights in 2013, 2014 or 2015. Next year's All-Star weekend will be Jan. 26-27 and will mark the third straight year a city has hosted the game for the first time. Raleigh, N.C., home of the Carolina Hurricanes, hosted the game last year and this year's game is Sunday in Ottawa.

"We're looking forward to bringing our All-Star celebration to Columbus," Bettman said. "The Blue Jackets did a great job of hosting the NHL Draft in 2007, and I have no doubt they will raise the bar even higher when they welcome our All-Star celebration next January."

It was welcome news for a team that is struggling this season. The Blue Jackets are 13-30-6 with a league-low 32 points. Only the Tampa Bay Lightning (165) have allowed more goals this season than Columbus (163).

"The Blue Jackets are honored to host the 2013 All-Star celebration in Columbus as we believe our city offers a truly unique setting for this special event," said Blue Jackets majority owner John P. McConnell. "As much as it is a showcase for the NHL's best players, it is also a celebration of hockey fans and having it in Columbus is a testament to the fantastic support of our fans and the strength of Central Ohio as a hockey market."

Abbott breezes to big lead at skating nationals

(AP) ? Jeremy Abbott took the ice with a rakish grin, popping his suspenders as he skated to center ice and fixing the audience with a wink.

"I said, 'Let's put on a show, let's have some fun," he said.

He certainly did.

Abbott's easy, breezy performance to a swing medley scored a whopping 90.23 points at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Friday night, a personal best and a mark that puts him in world champion Patrick Chan's territory. The two-time national champion leads training partner Adam Rippon by a commanding 7.29 points going into Sunday's free skate.

"It was a lot of fun," Abbott said. "I did the skate I wanted to do and I'm in the place I wanted to be."

Earlier Friday, Meryl Davis and Charlie White took a big step toward their fourth straight ice dance title, winning the short dance with a score of 76.89. That gave them a four-point lead over Maia and Alex Shibutani going into Saturday's free dance.

Abbott is one of the most technically sound skaters in the world, with beautiful edges that carve the ice like a master craftsman and perfect body control. He's also one of the few skaters who has managed to maintain the balance between the performance quality that makes figure skating so entertaining and the tough physical tricks the system now demands.

But he's had a tendency to fall apart on the big stage, flopping at the 2009 world championships and again at the Vancouver Olympics. When it happened again last year when a third U.S. title was his for the taking, Abbott decided he'd had enough.

He no longer cares what anyone thinks about him, much less any nasty things that are said. He's skating for himself and his own enjoyment, concerned only with achieving the goals he's set.

The attitude adjustment is clearly working.

Abbott opened with a huge triple flip-triple toe loop combination that was silky smooth, and followed with a triple axel that coaches might want to use as an example for their students. He seemed to be dancing he was so light on his feet, and even those sitting way up in the rafters could see his newfound confidence.

The audience was on its feet before he finished, and Abbott couldn't have stopped grinning if he tried. When he heard his marks, he shook his head and said, "Unbelievable." He was still savoring the score when a fan yelled out, "You're awesome!" prompting Abbott to grin and point back at him.

"They're not Patrick Chan points at Canadians, but they're Patrick Chan points in an international competition," Abbott said, referring to the generous marks Chan got at the Canadian championships earlier this month.

The performance is a good omen for Abbott, who won the short program both times he won the U.S. title. But while his spot in the standings is the same, this feels nothing like those other times.

"I feel much more mature and much more prepared for this championship than I did for the other two that I won," he said. "This time, my focus is just on skating the best I can skate. It hasn't been about winning. It's not to do anything but skate two programs I love to skate and secure a spot on the (world) team and continue my season so I can achieve the goals I've set."

Abbott's performance would have been tough for anyone to top, and no one came close. In fact, most of the supposed contenders looked more like pretenders, with splats and spills galore. Richard Dornbush, last year's silver medalist, was a mess, botching every one of his jumps. Brandon Mroz, the runner-up in 2009, fell on a quad toe and also brushed the ice with his free leg on his triple lutz-double toe combination.

Rippon and Armin Mahbanoozadeh, who was third, were the few bright spots.

Big things have been expected of Rippon since his spectacular junior career. He swept the major titles in 2008 ? U.S., world and Grand Prix final ? and followed it with another junior world title in 2009. But Rippon hasn't been able to duplicate that success as a senior, with fifth place his best finish at nationals.

"The expectations were hard to deal with at first," he said. "I felt like I was supposed to have the same success right away as a senior."

The struggles sent him bouncing from coach to coach in both Canada and the United States before he finally landed with Yuka Sato and Jason Dungjen in Detroit last June. But it took a bit of a meltdown during the Grand Prix season before Rippon turned a corner.

"I didn't know who I was as a skater anymore," he said. "I put myself in their hands and just trusted them, and it's paid off."

For the first time in several seasons, Rippon looked like the budding star he was always supposed to be. His performance to Russian folk music was both refined and in perfect character. He opened with a huge triple flip-triple toe loop combination, and his triple axel was even more impressive. The jump has been his downfall ? often literally ? in the past, but he landed it with such solid edge quality and smoothness that kids learning how to skate should YouTube it.

He had the crowd oohing and aahing over his Rippon triple lutz, done with both hands above his head, and his Russian split jump brought down the house. Fans were on their feet before his music ended, and Rippon shook his fists. When he saw his score, a new personal best, Rippon threw his head back and threw a couple little roundhouse punches.

"I had felt a little defeated before the short program in years past and I said I wasn't going to do that today," he said. "I have to go out there and fight for my career. Not just against other skaters, but for myself. I need to do this to give myself confidence again and I'm just really proud of myself."

Mahbanoozadeh had the misfortune of skating right after Abbott, but it didn't faze him a bit. He skated cleanly, and is just two points behind Rippon.

Davis and White have been unbeatable since finishing second to Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir at the 2010 world championships. They won the United States' first world title in dance last spring, and edged the Canadians again last month in the Grand Prix finals.

And as talented as the Shibutanis are, they're no match for Davis and White. At least, not yet.

Though every team skates to the same type of music in the short dance ? Latin is this year's choice ? Davis and White don't look close to anyone else. Their program was so intoxicating you were afraid to take your eyes off of them for fear you'd miss something original and unusual. Their edge quality was simply superb, and their speed would put Usain Bolt to shame.

But it's their presence that is truly captivating. Davis and White wear the title of champions easily, oozing confidence and self-assuredness.

Reward offered for released Mississippi murderer

Police are offering a reward to help track down a convicted murderer who was pardoned by former Gov. Haley Barbour, R-Miss. Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood joins NewsNation to discuss the situation.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Mississippi's attorney general is asking for the public?s help in tracking down a convicted killer who vanished weeks ago after being pardoned by former Governor Haley Barbour.

?I hate the fact that our former governor has unleashed this guy on the U.S.,? Attorney General Jim Hood told msnbc.com on Thursday. ?I equate this to having a manhunt with one arm tied behind my back.?

Authorities began looking for Ozment after the former inmate did not appear?on Monday?at a court hearing related to the pardons. Hood said he has offered an unspecified cash reward for information regarding Ozment's whereabouts.

Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman, sparked controversy by granting some 200 pardons, commutations and suspensions, generating debate about how much power a governor should have to pardon criminals convicted of serious crimes.

Barbour has defended his clemency decisions and said he was confident they were all valid and blamed political opponents for much of the controversy.

Ozment, 40, had been serving a life sentence for the 1993 robbery and shooting death of a store clerk in northwest Mississippi. He was one of five prisoners who had worked at the governor's mansion who saw their life prison terms lifted after receiving full pardons by Barbour.

Hood is seeking to void most of the pardons granted by Barbour because not enough public notice was given in the communities where the crimes were committed. He received a court order to temporarily block the pardons.

A judge allowed the five freed men, including Ozment, to remain out of prison while the matter was pending but required them to report daily to authorities. Ozment was the only one who has not done so, Hood said.

Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green has scheduled?a hearing for Feb. 3.

Hood asked anyone with information to call a confidential hotline at 1-800-281-4418.

SEC charges trader with hacking into accounts (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Federal regulators have filed civil charges against a trader in Latvia whom they accuse of hacking into U.S. customers' online brokerage accounts and driving prices of more than 100 stocks up or down by making unauthorized trades.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced charges Thursday against Igors Nagaicevs, a 34-year old Latvian citizen. The SEC also accused four online trading firms and eight executives of the firms of enabling Nagaicevs' scheme by allowing him anonymous access to the markets. Nagaicevs couldn't be located for comment.

The SEC said the scheme, allegedly conducted from June 2009 to August 2010, caused customer losses of more than $2 million, which were reimbursed by the firms. It netted Nagaicevs about $850,000 in illegal profits, the agency said. It is seeking unspecified fines and restitution.

Apple's Tim Cook responds to supply chain worker mistreatment (Digital Trends)

foxconn-workers

Amidst celebration of a record quarter, during which Apple brought in more than $46 billion in revenue, a stench of worker mistreatment at Foxconn factories in China, where Apple?s popular iPhone and iPad devices are assembled, arose out of the media ether.

?In the last decade, Apple has become one of the mightiest, richest and most successful companies in the world, in part by mastering global manufacturing. Apple and its high-technology peers ? as well as dozens of other American industries ? have achieved a pace of innovation nearly unmatched in modern history,? reads a recent report from The New York Times.

?However, the workers assembling iPhones, iPads and other devices often labor in harsh conditions, according to employees inside those plants, worker advocates and documents published by companies themselves. Problems are as varied as onerous work environments and serious ? sometimes deadly ? safety problems.?

In the tainted light of this report, Apple CEO Tim Cook has released an email to all Apple employees, in which he attempts to beat back claims that the world?s biggest and richest technology company doesn?t care about the people who build its products.

?As a company and as individuals, we are defined by our values. Unfortunately some people are questioning Apple?s values today, and I?d like to address this with you directly,? writes Cook in the email, obtained by 9to5Mac. ?We care about every worker in our worldwide supply chain. Any accident is deeply troubling, and any issue with working conditions is cause for concern. Any suggestion that we don?t care is patently false and offensive to us. As you know better than anyone, accusations like these are contrary to our values. It?s not who we are.?

Cook goes on to say that Apple is doing more than any other technology company to ensure that the people who help make Apple possible are treated fairly, and that it does not shy away from discovering new problems in its supply chain, in an effort to improve worker conditions.

?We are attacking problems aggressively with the help of the world?s foremost authorities on safety, the environment, and fair labor,? writes Cook. ?It would be easy to look for problems in fewer places and report prettier results, but those would not be the actions of a leader.?

To further advertise its commitment to worker safety, Apple has launched a ?Supplier Responsibility? page on its website, which details the actions it takes towards ensuring good working conditions and environmentally-friendly production practices. Concerned customers can review Apple?s efforts and findings here.

Tropical depression hits Mozambique (AP)

MAPUTO, Mozambique ? Mozambique's meteorological service says the second tropical depression to hit the southern part of the country in two weeks has destroyed thousands of homes.

Sergio Buque says that heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds have affected more than 250,000 families since the storms began last week. He says the newest tropical depression moved from the central province of Sofala, where it hit Wednesday night, to the southern Inhambane province.

State radio reported Thursday that two more people were killed by heavy rains in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, bringing the total death toll of the storms across Mozambique to 26.

The rains have also inflicted heavy losses in the Montepuez district, where more than 22,200 acres (9,000 hectares) of crops, including the country's staple food maize, are under water.

Travelers will see changes at United Continental

Travelers will see big changes this year when they fly on United.

The airline, which merged with Continental in October 2010, said on Thursday that it's on track to combine computerized reservation systems and frequent-flier programs in early March. After that, it will move to a single website.

The update came as United Continental Holdings Inc. posted a fourth-quarter loss, due mostly to merger costs.

The combination of the two airlines into one carrier flying under the United name will speed up this year. The March computer changeover is an important part. The airline is a world-wide operation flying an average of 264,000 people every day. To sell tickets, its computers have to know where those planes are going and who is on them.

The changes mean that passengers will see a more unified airline. Travelers will be able to use ticket counters for either airline. The company's planes will have more gate options, because the computers at those gates will be able to handle both United and Continental flights.

Chairman and CEO Jeff Smisek said the company has done four dress rehearsals of moving the data. If something goes wrong they can either move back to the old system or postpone the transfer, he said.

"We are exceedingly well prepared for it," he said on a conference call. "I am confident this will go as planned."

Besides the computer switch, the company has repainted hundreds of planes and moved operations and some workers from Continental's old headquarters in Houston to its new base at United's headquarters in Chicago.

Largely because of merger expenses, United Continental lost $138 million, or 42 cents a share, in the fourth quarter. That was smaller than the year-earlier loss of $325 million, which was also due to merger expenses.

The company incurred $517 million in merger expenses in 2011, including $170 million in the fourth quarter. Chief Financial Officer Zane Rowe said costs are expected to continue at that fourth-quarter level at least through the first half of this year.

Helped by fare increases, revenue rose 5.5 percent to $8.93 billion, matching analyst expectations. Revenue for each passenger flown one mile rose 8.2 percent.

Despite higher fares and strong travel demand, United Continental said flying capacity in 2012 will be flat to down 1 percent. For the first quarter, it said flying capacity will range between rising 0.3 percent to falling 0.7 percent. It said it would reduce domestic flying and increase international flying. Its flying capacity shrank slightly last year, too.

For all of 2011, the company earned $840 million, down from a 2010 profit ? if the two companies had been combined ? of $955 million. Full-year revenue rose 8.8 percent to $37 billion.

Also Thursday, JetBlue Airways Corp. said its fourth-quarter profit nearly tripled to $23 million, or 8 cents per share, on an 11 percent increase in traffic. Revenue rose 22 percent to $1.15 billion. Both figures were better than analysts expected.

Alaska Air Group Inc., parent of Alaska Airlines, earned $64 million, or $1.76 per share, for the quarter. That was down 1 percent from a year earlier as its fuel bill jumped. Revenue rose 9 percent to $1.04 billion. Both figures were below analyst expectations.

United Continental shares rose $1.29, or 6.3 percent, to close at $21.70. JetBlue rose 23 cents, or 4.1 percent, to close at $5.80. Seattle-based Alaska Air Group fell $2.73, or 3.6 percent, to $72.71.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is being held out of practice with an injured left ankle.

Gronkowski, who set an NFL record for tight ends with 17 touchdown catches this season, limped off the field in the third quarter of Sunday's 23-20 win over Baltimore in the AFC championship game but returned about five minutes later. On Monday he was seen wearing a removable boot on his left foot.

Coach Bill Belichick said that Gronkowski would not take part Thursday in the team's first practice for the Super Bowl against the New York Giants on Feb. 5.

Asked how Gronkowski was progressing, Belichick said, "good, good."

He was noncommittal on how the Patriots would be affected if Gronkowski plays in the Super Bowl without practicing for it.

"We'll just have to see, you know," Belichick said. "He's not going to practice today, so take it day by day. I'm not going to try to forecast where things will be 10 days from now. We'll just take it day by day."

Gronkowski started all 16 regular-season games and two playoff games. Belichick said he believed Gronkowski took part in just about every practice this season.

Also on Thursday, the Patriots signed to the practice squad tight end Carson Butler, who spent most of the 2010 season on their practice squad and was released Sept. 2. The only other tight end on the roster is Aaron Hernandez. Another tight end, Garrett Mills, is on the practice squad.

For many luxury car buyers, small is now beautiful

ka.plewka

The 3-Series is far and away the best-seller for BMW.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, msnbc.com contributor

When Mercedes-Benz pulls the covers on the all-new A-Class hatchback during the Geneva Motor Show this March, car buyers will get a glimpse of the changes rapidly sweeping through the luxury car market.

The pint-sized Benz clearly doesn?t fit the classic mold. Americans, in particular, have always defined luxury cars by the inch and pound, with some of the most memorable models from Detroit stretching over 20 feet, nose-to-tail. And there are products that hew to that classic image, like the 3-ton Rolls-Royce Phantom.

But in today?s world even luxury buyers are well aware of fuel costs and crowded urban streets. That?s especially true in markets like Europe, where downsized models have been gaining traction for more than a decade. But manufacturers are betting that even in the U.S. the mantra for many luxury buyers is now ?small is beautiful.?

Certainly, the market for so-called entry-luxury offerings has never been more substantial. The 3-Series is far and away the best-seller for BMW, much as the A4 is for Audi.?

?What defines luxury has been evolving,? says Rebecca Lindland, chief researcher for IHS Automotive, who adds that Americans are beginning to catch up with global trends.

Compact models, such as the A4 and 3-Series, appeal to a wide range of buyers and for a number of different reasons. For some they are the affordable entry point into the luxury market. For others they are all you need ?to get the luxury look and conveniences you want,? Lindland added.

With all the varied offerings, old and new, in the BMW line-up, from the X3 crossover to the flagship 7-Series, the ?3-er? is by far the best-seller, generating 94,000 unit sales in 2010, or roughly a third of the brand?s total U.S. volume. That?s down about 7 percent from the 101,000 BMWs sold in 2010 -- but it?s no surprise, given that the current 3-Series was in its final year, the automaker unveiling an all-new version at the 2012 Detroit auto show in early January.

Indeed, the annual event was chock full of entry-luxury models, including not only the new BMW, but also a replacement for the Audi A4 and an all-new compact luxury model from Cadillac, dubbed the ATS.

The Germans shouldn?t be?complacent when it comes to Caddy?s chances.

?I think the ATS is going to be very competitive,? said Joe Phillippi, chief analyst with AutoTrends Consulting, adding that the car is ?spectacular.?

The new model slots under Cadillac?s existing CTS -- which will now move slightly up-market, targeting the BMW 5-Series. If the General Motors brand is on target, the ATS could soon become its best-selling product line.

But the ATS will find tough competition coming from sources other than Germany. Lexus fields a pair of offerings in the segment, the IS and ES lines, which collectively generated 71,000 sales last year, about 2,000 more than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

No product line arguably underscores the changes that have swept through the luxury market in recent decades. It took several years of debate before the carmaker grudgingly brought to market the so-called ?Baby Benz.??It proved far more successful than initially anticipated, appealing to both young buyers and to those who wanted a more fuel-efficient alternative after the twin oil shocks of the 1970s.

These days, the C-Class lags well behind its Bavarian competitor, ?reflecting the problems Mercedes is having, in general, connecting with young buyers,? says analyst Lindland.

Stan Honda / AFP - Getty Images

Upscale sedans, electric vehicles and old-school muscle cars make their debuts at the 2012 North American International Auto show.

Appealing to the next-generation ?will be critical,? suggests Clay Dean, head of GM?s advanced design department, because getting a young buyer in early improves a brand?s chances of keeping them around as they grow older and choose to trade up -- although it?s a matter of debate whether ?millennial? buyers will follow the traditional ?bigger-and-better? path of older generations.

That?s why carmakers like Mercedes are looking at even smaller offerings, such as the new A-Class, which will be the Teutonic carmaker?s first model based on the new MFA (?modular front architecture?) platform for compact luxury vehicles. According to Daimler AG?s CEO Dieter Zetsche, as many as five different Mercedes product lines will likely share that platform, including the only slightly larger B-Class.

Meanwhile, as part of an expanding series of joint ventures, the MFA platform will be shared with the Euro-Asian Renault-Nissan Alliance. It will first appear under the sleek skin of the Infiniti Etherea -- a production version of the concept vehicle that was a smash hit at last year?s Geneva Motor Show.

In a quid-pro-quo, Nissan will provide a new generation of small, high-mileage four-cylinder engines for the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class. That updated sedan will go into production in 2014 at Mercedes? Tuscaloosa, Ala., assembly line.

That, in itself, is a significant move, as lopsided exchange rates are a serious problem for both European and Asian importers. The weaker dollar compared to the yen and euro has made it difficult to generate a profit importing even small luxury models. That could give a leg up, for once, to Cadillac, with the ATS, until foreign carmakers can shift production to their U.S. factories.

The alternative would be to walk away from what is, by all expectations, likely to be the fastest-growing segment of the American market.

That?s a strategy that would cause more problems than it solves. While it remains unclear just how small is too small for American luxury buyers -- the success of the new A-Class anything but certain -- there?s no doubt that the battle for the entry-luxury buyer with products like the 3-Series, A4 and ATS only now heating up.

Helmet catch will forever define Tyree's career

(AP) ? Eli Manning took home the MVP. Plaxico Burress had the game-winning catch. David Tyree got the biggest prize in the 2008 Super Bowl ? an unforgettable moment that forever will be his.

No play in the New York Giants' 17-14 victory over the New England Patriots has been shown more than Tyree's fourth-quarter catch of a ball against his helmet with defender Rodney Harrison draped over him.

It led to Manning's last-minute touchdown pass to Burress and changed Tyree's life.

The New Jersey native became a hero in the New York metropolitan area, earned up to $15,000 per appearance fees, made numerous television and radio appearances and wrote a book.

"The truth of it was I was never going to have a moment ever in my career that was going to eclipse that," Tyree said in a conference call about what is known as "The Catch" in Giants history. "It gave me a sense of peace as far as moving on and knowing I had a career that I can be satisfied with.

"It's not about the money; it's about, for me, having a moment that transcends my own personal career, to be a part of Giants history, NFL history, Super Bowl history," Tyree said. "That's something that most people who've had far better careers than myself never had."

A sixth-round draft pick out of Syracuse by the Giants in 2003, Tyree didn't do much after the Super Bowl. He hurt his knee and missed the following season, and spent his last year with Baltimore, failing to make a catch. He retired in 2010 after signing a one-day contract with the Giants.

Off the field, Tyree has turned around his life. His days of drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana are long behind him and he has become born-again Christian

The 32-year-old father of six serves as the director of strategic partnerships at Tepidus Group, a company involved in wealth management, marketing and philanthropic ventures. He is also writing another book with his wife, Leilah, that intends to "challenge the core of our culture."

One thing they will address, he said is "how we esteem people who are in the limelight and have been given pedestals and platforms."

Tyree also is the senior vice president of the International Children's Support Foundation, which tries to improve the lives children.

The Pro Bowl special teams player also isn't afraid to express his religious beliefs. He has come out against same sex marriages, and he has been criticized by many.

"I knew what I was getting myself into," he said.

Tyree plans to attend the Super Bowl next week and he said he might get a few speaking engagements out of it.

Tyree has watched the Giants (12-7) current run to a Super Bowl rematch with the Patriots and he marvels at the similarities, calling them spooky.

New York has once again made a late-season rush and done its most damage in the postseason on the road, knocking off the defending champion Green Bay Packers in the NFC division round and the San Francisco 49ers in the conference title game.

After the 2007 regular season, the Giants won all their playoff games on the road, winning at Tampa, Dallas and Green Bay.

Placekicker Lawrence Tynes made game-winning field goals in overtime both conference championship games.

"I might have been just as speechless as I was when we won the Super Bowl four years ago," Tyree said.

Tyree had three catches in the Super Bowl, including one for a touchdown. The one everybody remembers is the 32-yarder on a third-and-5 play with 1:15 to play and the Giants trailing the then-unbeaten Patriots 14-10.

Manning avoided a big pass rush and lofted a long pass down the middle. Tyree leapt, got his hands on the ball, then pinned it against his helmet, first with one hand and then the other. All the while, Harrison was pulling Tyree to the ground by the arm.

Harrison said Wednesday that the only time he thought about the play was when his son gave him a book for Christmas a couple of years ago with a picture of the play on the front cover.

"It's in my office," Harrison said. "Every time I walk in my office I see it so I'm reminded of it every single day.

"But it doesn't haunt me. It's something that happened, you know. It's almost funny because I look back at my career and I started thinking, do I have any regrets? And I don't really have any regrets because I played hard, I played tough, I played physical and you ask this guy to make this catch a million other times, he doesn't make it. So it's just one of those things that you look at and say, 'wow, you know what? No matter what I could have done, he was going to catch that ball. It was just meant to happen.' "

Call it fate. But it's a catch that made Tyree famous and gave him a place in football history.

Signature Launches To Bring A Personalized, Mobile Shopping Service To Brick And Mortar Retailers

SignatureAs I wrote in December, brick and mortar retailers will need to personalize and make the in-store shopping experience unique to compete with online e-commerce sites. Today, Signature is launching to help retailers deliver a more personalized experience for consumers at retail stores. The Signature mobile app is essentially a personal shopping assistant, providing a curated shopping experience, with up-to-date product information, and customer service. Signature, which is available as an iPhone app, will deliver notifications around shopping events and information such as updates on preferred items and brands, or when new arrivals hit the floor. Customers will also get an in-store greeting with a summary of what's new, the latest fashions on the floor, and any relevant sales or events.
