No. 24 Cal easily beats UC San Diego in exhibition (AP)

BERKELEY, Calif. ? Allen Crabbe scored 12 points in the second half and No. 24 California overcame a sluggish start to beat UC San Diego 88-53 in an exhibition game on Tuesday night.

Crabbe, the Pac-12's freshman of the year last season, missed three of his first four shots and had only two points at halftime. He responded with eight points in a quick burst following the break, and later scored on consecutive trips down the court when the Golden Bears built a 67-39 lead.

Reserve Justin Cobbs had 17 points for the Bears, who open the regular season next week against Irvine. Harper Kamp added 10 points and Jorge Gutierrez, Cal's leading scorer a year ago, had seven points and four assists.

Coach Mike Montgomery's team, which returns four starters from last year, looked sharp after a rough start.

The Bears led by nine at halftime, then went on a 22-4 run after intermission. Crabbe sparked the surge, and Kamp and Richard Solomon added five points apiece during the burst.

Jeff Powers, who finished with 12 points, made a jumper with 1:34 left to give Cal its biggest lead at 88-50 before Dylan Bohanan made a 3-pointer for UC San Diego.

Christian Hatch, the Division II Tritons' leading scorer last season, had 14 points and seven rebounds. San Diego, which lost to Utah State in an exhibition game last Friday, played without injured starters Justin Brue and James McCann.

Before Crabbe took over in the second half, Cal leaned heavily on Cobbs.

A sophomore who sat out last year after transferring from Minnesota, Cobbs scored 16 of Cal's final 24 points before halftime and punctuated his strong debut at Haas Pavilion by driving the length of the floor and scoring on a three-point play with 3.9 seconds left.

Robert Thurman, who played sparingly last season, added eight points and three rebounds to help the Bears to a 41-32 lead at the break.

China nabs fake drug ring; US FDA urges vigilance (AP)

SHANGHAI ? Police in central China's Henan province say they have arrested 114 people in a crackdown on a counterfeit drugs ring and seized $30 million in fake medications.

Their report Tuesday came as a top U.S. Food and Drug Administration official, Dara Corrigan, was visiting Shanghai to discuss the importance of safe drugs and China's role as a major supplier to the U.S. market.

China's increasing importance as a major pharmaceuticals producer has ratcheted up concern over a slew of scandals over fake, adulterated and otherwise unsafe drugs ? especially given the thriving market in mail order medications.

Authorities in the Henan city of Kaifeng said they raided 117 fake drug production and sales sites in the latest crackdown.

Pistons C Wallace pleads guilty in alcohol case (AP)

PONTIAC, Mich. ? Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possessing a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.

Wallace entered the plea Tuesday in Oakland County Circuit Court in Pontiac. Sentencing is Dec. 13. He faces a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail.

In exchange, prosecutors agreed to drop a felony carrying a concealed weapon charge.

Police in Oakland County's Bloomfield Township said the 37-year-old Wallace was arrested during a traffic stop about 3 a.m. Sept. 24 after officers observed a Cadillac Escalade being driven erratically. Police said they found an unloaded pistol registered to Wallace's wife in a backpack.

A breath test showed Wallace had a blood-alcohol level of 0.14 percent. The legal limit in Michigan is 0.08 percent.

?Cro Cop? loses final fight at UFC 137, Nelson uses belly and power to finish him off

?Cro Cop? loses final fight at UFC 137, Nelson uses belly and power to finish him off

LAS VEGAS - Over the last 10 years, Mirko Filipovic put on dozens of tremendous shows for fans of mixed martials, so the ending at UFC 137 was fitting.

The 37-year-old brought it and tried to slug it out with Roy Nelson, but the younger fighter's well-rounded game took over in the second and he scored a TKO win at the 1:30 mark of third at UFC 137.

"Cro Cop" was one of the most feared fighters in the world during his time with PRIDE fighting in Japan. His run with the UFC was less than stellar, but the fans never lost their love for the Crotian kickboxer. Even tonight, the Las Vegas crowd went nuts anytime Cro Cop landed a punch or kick.

"This is going to be my final fight. I didn't make a goodbye victory," a sad Cro Cop told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "Roy was just better tonight. I want to thank all you guys, especially the UFC fans."

Cro Cop (27-10, 4-6 UFC) was very much in the fight into the middle of the second round. Two minutes in, he rocked Nelson with a left and then got off 20-25 unanswered shots. Nelson covered up and survived, enabling him to score a very important takedown with 2:35 left.

Nelson quickly moved to side control where he worked for the dominant crucifix position. Once he got it with less than 45 seconds left, he pounded away on the helpless Cro Cop. Nelson, who came into this fight about 15-17 pounds less than previous fights, still has a good-sized belly. He used that to his advantage as he smothered the 37-year-0ld. Cro Cop survived the round, but when he rose to his feet his face was all marked up.

In the third, the Croatian's legs weren't there and he got drilled by a straight right. Cro Cop went into retreat mode. A little over minute into the round, he got dropped by a left. Nelson jumped on top, got his hooks in and flattened him out. He threw four or five bigbombs to the side of Cro Cop's head and it was stopped.

"It was awesome to fight with a legend. It's good just to be back in the 'W' column.?Cro Cop can still tear it up," Nelson said. "My game plan was to strike and mix it up so you see a little bit of everything."

'Puss in Boots' claws its way to No. 1

Competing against Halloween parties and contending with an unseasonal blizzard in the Northeast, DreamWorks Animation?s "Puss in Boots," distributed by Paramount, purred its way to the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated $34 million. That amounted to a new Halloween weekend record, leaping over the $33.6 million that "Saw III" registered in 2006.

But the weekend?s two other new wide releases displayed far less derring-do. Fox?s sci-fi tale "In Time," starring Justin Timberlake, debuted in third place with $12 million, while the Johnny Depp starrer, "The Rum Diary," released by FilmDistrict had to settle for a sobering $5 million and a fifth place showing.

Meanwhile, another animated movie, Steven Spielberg's "Tintin" got off to a strong start in 19 foreign markets where it collected an estimated $55.8 million. In 17 of those markets, it opened at number one, including the United Kingdom, where it took in $10.7 million and France, where it amassed $21.5 million. While Paramount handled the film in the U.K., Sony rolled it out in the other territories. The movie opens stateside via Paramount on Dec. 21.

Weekend box office

  1. Totals for Oct. 28-30

    1. "Puss in Boots," $34 million
    2. "Paranormal Activity 3," $18.5 million
    3. "In Time," $12 million
    4. "Footloose," $5.4 million
    5. "The Rum Diary," $5 million
    6. "Real Steel," $4.7 million
    7. "The Three Musketeers," $3.5 million
    8. "The Ides of March" $2.7 million
    9. "Moneyball," $2.9 million
    10. "Courageous," $1.8 million

While "Puss" challenged the holiday ? Halloween weekend is usually reserved for scary movies rather than family fare ? a ghost story did hold down the second slot as Paramount?s "Paranormal Activity 3" slid 65 percent as it entered its second weekend. The second prequel to 2009?s original "Paranormal Activity," the new movie took in an additional $18.5 million to bring its domestic gross to $81.3 million.

In addition to "Puss" and "Paranormal," Paramount also had a third entry in the top five as the toe-tapping "Footloose," in its third weekend, took in $5.4 million for fourth-place standing, bringing its domestic total to $38.4 million.

Michael Lohan still in Florida jail after judge denies bail

michael-lohan-april-2011-gi.jpgMichael Lohan will have some time to recover from jumping from the roof of a motel earlier in the week. He'll just have to do it in jail.

A judge in Hillsborough County, Fla., denied bail to Lindsay Lohan's dad in a hearing Saturday morning (Oct. 29), Tampa Bay Online reports. That would be on his second arrest of the week, all stemming from a domestic-violence case involving his sometime girlfriend, former tabloid reporter/alleged Jon Gosselin paramour Kate Major.

To review: The 51-year-old Lohan was first booked Tuesday on suspicion of battery after Major told police Lohan grabbed her arms and pushed her, knocking her over. He posted $5,000 bail and was released.

Lohan was arretsed again Wednesday after allegedly calling Major, in violation of a restraining order given after the initial arrest. He then tried to elude police by jumping from the roof of the three-story Tahitian Inn in Tampa. He spent a couple days in a hospital for treatment of a foot injury, then was transferred to the Hillsborough County Jail on Friday.

Major attended the bail hearing and replied, "Absolutely," when Judge Denise Pomponio asked if she thought Lohan posed a threat to her.
