BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Roberto Soldado's late goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for Valencia against Athletic Bilbao, while Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with Mallorca on Sunday in the Spanish league.

After an evenly matched first half with both team hitting the post, Iker Muniain scored Bilbao's 72nd-minute opener when he deftly dribbled across the edge of the area before shooting powerfully into the right corner of the net.

Bilbao appeared set to record its third straight league win before Soldado reached Ever Banega's pass, beat goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz with one touch and rolled home the equalizer in the 89th for his sixth goal of the season.

The game saw Valencia midfielder Sergio Canales and Bilbao veteran Carlos Gurpegi both helped off the pitch with leg injuries.

In Madrid, visitors Mallorca went ahead two minutes in through Israel striker Tomer Hemed's fourth spot kick in the last three matches.

Radamel Falcao pulled Atletico even at Vicente Calderon stadium with a penalty of his own in the 42nd after he was fouled in the area to break a three-game scoring drought for his team in league play.

"It wasn't in our plans to draw today," said Atletico coach Gregorio Manzano, whose team extended its winless streak to four games in league play. "It was a tough game for us. We were facing a well-organized defense that left us very few spaces."

It was Mallorca's second consecutive draw since coach Joaquin Caparros took over following the stormy departure of Michael Laudrup.

Also, Osasuna beat Zaragoza 3-0, Rayo Vallecano scored twice late to down Real Betis 2-0 and Getafe drew 0-0 at Real Sociedad.

Osasuna needed half an hour to decide the contest at Reyno de Navarra stadium.

Raul Garcia set Osasuna on its way to its first win in six games in the 18th before flicking on a throw-in for Juan "Nino" Martinez to finish off in nine minutes later.

Iran midfielder Javad Nekounam put the victory beyond doubt in the 30th when he headed in Nino's cross.

In Sevilla, Betis failed to convert a number of scoring chances, and Rayo's Lass Bangoura capped his strong performance in the 80th minute when he coolly chipped Betis goalkeeper Casto Barriga.

"Lass is a player who is giving his all for this team and adapting very well," said Rayo coach Jose Sandoval about the 19-year-old Guinean winger.

Sergio Contreras then sealed Betis' fourth straight loss in the 88th from the penalty spot.

Levante can move ahead of overnight leader Real Madrid with a sixth consecutive win at Villarreal in the late game after Valencia hosts Athletic Bilbao.

Barcelona was held to a 0-0 draw by Sevilla on Saturday, letting Madrid provisionally take a one-point lead atop the table after Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick in its 4-0 win at big-spending Malaga.

Sporting Gijon also beat Granada 2-0 for its first win of the season, while Sergio Garcia's second-half goal dropped winless Racing Santander into last place as Espanyol won 1-0 for its second straight away victory.

Children with certain dopamine system gene variants respond better to ADHD drug

Friday, October 21, 2011

Children with certain dopamine system gene variants have an improved response to methylphenidate - the most commonly prescribed medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - in a finding that could help eliminate the guesswork from prescribing effective medications for children with ADHD.

Researchers reporting their results in the Oct. 21 Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry tested 89 children with ADHD between ages 7 and 11. They found that children with specific variants of the dopamine transporter (DAT) and dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) genes showed greater improvement in hyperactivity and impulsivity after taking methylphenidate compared to children with alternative DAT and DRD4 versions.

"Physicians don't have a good way of predicting who will experience great improvement in ADHD symptoms with a particular medication, so currently we use a trial-and-error approach. Unfortunately, as a result, finding an effective treatment can take a long time," explained Tanya Froehlich M.D., lead investigator on the study and a physician in the division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

"With more information about genes that may be involved in ADHD medication response, we may be able to predict treatment course, tailor our approach to each child, and improve symptom response while decreasing health care costs," she added.

The study is the first-ever placebo-controlled pharmacogenetic drug trial for ADHD in school age children to evaluate the effects of dopamine system genes variants using teacher as well as parent ratings of children's symptoms. Given the importance of academic functioning for children with ADHD, Dr. Froehlich said it is crucial to consider medication impact at school as well as at home. Children in the study were not already taking stimulant medications for their ADHD.

Participants were prescribed one week each of placebo and three different doses of methylphenidate for their ADHD. Parents and teachers assessed and scored the children's behavioral symptoms based on the Vanderbilt ADHD Parent and Teacher Rating Scales.

The researchers analyzed DNA from saliva samples to see which ADHD-related gene types the children carried. They looked initially at four genes frequently implicated in ADHD ? DRD4, DAT, COMT and ADRA2A. DRD4 and DAT, the most well studied genes for ADHD, showed the strongest effects on methylphenidate dose-response in study participants, according to the researchers.

The DRD4 gene encodes the dopamine receptor protein, which helps control the synthesis and release of dopamine and the firing rate of neurons. The DAT gene encodes the dopamine transporter protein, which removes dopamine from the brain synapses.

Children who lack what is known as the DAT 10-repeat variant showed greater improvement after taking methylphenidate compared to those carrying the 10-repeat. Children without the DRD4 gene 4-repeat variant showed less symptomatic improvement with methylphenidate compared to 4-repeat carriers. A "repeat" is a short nucleotide coding sequences in a gene that is repeated.

Dr. Froehlich and her colleagues indicate in their study that although findings are promising, additional research is needed in larger patient samples to confirm current study findings and their clinical relevance.

El Salvador asking US to extend migrant program (AP)

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador ? El Salvador's president says he will ask Washington to halt deportations of Salvadorans and extend a program that allows those who are in the U.S. illegally to stay.

President Mauricio Funes says he wants to be sure El Salvador's "temporary protected status" doesn't expire in March.

That U.S. program benefits foreigners whose return to their home country may be dangerous because of a natural disaster or other reasons.

Funes said Friday that 10 days of heavy rains have destroyed crops and towns in El Salvador while killing 32 people. The storms have killed 105 across Central America.

The U.S. granted El Salvador temporary protected status in 2001 after earthquakes devastated the nation. It has been extended since.

Worms Crazy Golf tops iPhone Games of the Week (Appolicious)

The strategy game series Worms is generally about big explosions and cartoonish wars, but the earthworm battle atmosphere is pretty well translated to golf with Worms Crazy Golf. A worthy title for the Games of the Week, it heads up a great list of titles that includes multiplayer, puzzle and action titles. Check them out below.

Worms manages to hit a stride similar to Super Stickman Golf ? a side-scrolling golfing game with crazy environments ? and takes it up a notch. First is the Worms license, which adds a humorous and cartoonish bent to the game. Then, the game expands on the simplicity of its golf undertones by throwing in things like the ability to choose what club to use or add spin to the ball after it lands. There are also obstacles like groundskeepers and sheep with which to deal, resulting in a fairly deep golf experience that?s also light-hearted and fun. It has pass-and-play multiplayer, so it?s great for a party as well as alone.

Finally, Death Rally has multiplayer! The racing-and-shooting title has been great for a long time and has only gotten better as developer Remedy added more and more content with each of its six updates. But with this seventh update, the game finally hits its stride by adding online multiplayer for as many as four players. Death Rally has always felt like a perfect multiplayer game, what with mixing racing fast cars on beautiful courses with shooting missiles at your opponents. The missing multiplayer aspect was a serious disappointment ? up until now. Given that the game is as fun as it is alone, it?s even better with friends. Fortunately, now you and your buddies can enjoy blowing up each other?s vehicles.

It?s hard to argue with a lot of content without having to pay a lot of money, and that?s what?s available in the Corona Indie Bundle. It?s five games for the price of one, and the titles contained within are pretty decent. Just two or three of these games would be nice, but having all five is quite a bit of content, and worthy of picking up for any mobile gaming fan. All are notable indie titles, but The Secret of Grisly Manor is worth the price of entry on its own. Throw in the other addictive titles (Chicken?s Quest, Walkabout, Robot 99 and Float) and this one becomes a great deal.

It?s hard to deny the highly addictive nature of Fruit Ninja. But the game hasn?t been changed too much since its release. With the movie tie-in title Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots, players get some new challenges to put their fruit-dicing skills to the test. One half of the game is much like the Fruit Ninja of old, but the Challenge mode is where the real fun is at. Colorful fruits fly in formations that have to be quickly diced, or appear from behind doors only to disappear quickly again. Some are even covered by huge bombs. They?re all obstacles you have to deal with in the Challenge mode. Even the various stages are slightly different in this game mode, with fruits bouncing off walls and hitting floors to change how they move. It successfully takes all that time you put into Fruit Ninja and forces you to apply those skills in a new way.

A side-scrolling 2-D running title, Zombie Parkour has a great art style, lots of fast-twitch action, and zombies. The game requires quite a bit of attention to be paid to it to rack-up high scores, but in general it?s just addictive to try to time your taps on the screen to leap, vault and slide under various obstacles throughout the course of the game. Zombie Parkour is weirdly hypnotic and it?s generally possible to replay levels to increase your high score. The game has enough of a hook to keep players coming back, and features 24 levels to keep you occupied. But more than anything, finding the collectibles and the challenge of executing levels perfectly is what will keep players coming back.

*Full disclosure: Zombie Parkour Runner is made by Up Up Down Down Games, a subsidiary of Break Media, which owns GameFront.com, for whom I write about video games. My affiliation with Break is how I found out about the game, but that?s all the interaction I?ve had with anyone from Break regarding it. I paid for it and enjoyed it, which is why it?s included here.
