MEXICO CITY ? Mexico's president is mourning the death of well-known columnist and democracy advocate Miguel Angel Granados Chapa, calling his passing a sad say for letters and journalism in Mexico.
President Felipe Calderon says Granados Chapa was a vigorous defender of freedom of expression and tireless journalist whose critiques strengthened democratic culture and life.
Calderon issued his condolences in a statement late Sunday.
The newspaper Reforma, where Granados Chapa wrote the column, Public Square, said he died Sunday afternoon at the age of 70.
He was a key player in Mexico's march toward democracy, a founder of the investigative magazine Proceso and three-time winner of the country's National Journalism Award.
